In recent months, the Premodern format has seen tremendous growth in popularity. Despite no new cards being introduced, largely due to the attention generated by Magic Online, the metagame has remained fresh and ripe for innovation.
At this point, Premodern has also become the driving force behind several significant price increases in the Magic market. Many older cards, lacking reprints, have risen in value due to increased demand, and Morphling appears to be the next candidate.
Morphling
Compared to current top-tier threats, Morphling might seem a bit dated. In an era marked by power creep, this shapeshifter appears rather clunky, especially considering that each activated ability requires mana.
However, in the Premodern context, Morphling still holds significant value. The format doesn't have many threats capable of winning a game on their own, and Morphling fits perfectly into this category. Besides being a large and evasive attacker, its protection ability makes it very difficult to remove as long as you have mana available.
For this reason, it often appears in small quantities in the sideboards of blue decks like Azorius Standstill and Stiflenought.
Outside of Premodern, Morphling also finds a home in some Commander decks, especially with cards like Mairsil, the Pretender and Rex, Cyber-Hound, although its usage remains quite niche.
The Price Increase
In the European market, the situation differs from the American peaks; on CardTrader, the average value hovers around €10–15, with some copies potentially rising higher based on condition.
This means that, for now, Europe has not yet fully absorbed the spike seen in the USA ($30–50), creating an interesting window for buyers.
Scarcity remains a key factor: Morphling has few reprints and limited availability, so even a small increase in demand is enough to quickly push prices upward.
Outlook
Currently, there are no clear signs of an imminent decline. Premodern's growth continues, and the card remains a stable presence, even if often as a single copy.
The real risk is linked to the metagame: if archetypes like Stiflenought were to be weakened, Morphling might also lose its appeal.
Ultimately, in the European market, we are still in a "pre-spike" phase compared to the United States. This makes the card interesting to monitor, but with the usual uncertainty typical of Premodern-related speculations.
