Even though the main Marvel Super Heroes set spoiler season lasted just a week, Wizards packed it to the brim with new cards. In fact, it is the largest Standard-legal set ever, at a whopping 386 cards in total. In such a large set, not every card is a hit, but there are plenty of exciting new additions. Here are our picks for the best MTG Marvel Super Heroes cards.

Honorable Mention: The New Dual Lands

The new Marvel Super Heroes land cycle occupies an interesting position among recently printed dual lands. These lands can always tap for both of their colors on the turn they enter, but they lose a lot of value if you can’t get a basic land onto the battlefield quickly. With new cycles like the Verge and Surveil lands now a fixture in the format, Commander manabases are playing fewer basic lands than ever, which is a real problem.

With that said, I still expect to see these lands played, especially in two-color Commander lists or budget decks with plenty of basic lands. Even if they don’t fit everywhere, decks with a healthy number of basics, such as Selesnya Landfall, could find room for them.

Honorable Mention: The Mind Stone

Like The Soul Stone before it, The Mind Stone is a fantastic mana rock with tons of upside. Indestructible is huge here, and the Harness ability is arguably even better than The Soul Stone‘s, as you don’t need to sacrifice a creature to use it. On top of that, simply being a ramp option for white is a big deal in itself, given that the color isn’t exactly blessed in that regard.

Despite all this, The Mind Stone only lands an honorable mention spot because it’s very unlikely to see play outside of Commander. Unless it’s a truly powerful piece like Badgermole Cub, two-mana ramp just isn’t really good enough in constructed formats anymore.

The Soul Stone only saw a few scattered singletons in some lists, and I expect The Mind Stone to follow the same path. Unfortunately for those who want to assemble all six Infinity Stones, I also expect this card to remain equally expensive, regardless of its rather narrow applications.

5 | Avengers Disassembled

Even in today’s hyper-efficient Magic, three mana for a three-damage board wipe is still a great deal. Anger of the Gods, after all, still sees regular play in Pioneer, and even more in Commander. While it lacks that card’s powerful exile clause, Avengers Disassembled more than makes up for it with its second option, which gives it tons of versatility.

At its simplest, it’s a great way to remove problematic non-basic lands from the board, whether it’s Gaea’s Cradle in Commander or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in Pioneer. Alternatively, you can use it on your Indestructible lands, like Darksteel Citadel, turning it into a sort of pseudo-ramp.

Land destruction decks built around similar effects have had mixed results in both Pioneer and Modern, so Avengers Disassembled is a great addition to those lists. Additionally, it could easily appear in Standard as a stabilization tool for decks like Jeskai Control. If we add the inevitable deluge of Commander play it will see, Avengers Disassembled is clearly one of the best new MTG Marvel Super Heroes cards.

4 | World War Hulk

Sagas often suffer from distributing their effects too slowly, but World War Hulk sidesteps the issue by bringing the biggest impact right away. Being able to cheat any red or green creature onto the battlefield for five mana is a fantastic deal, allowing you to cast enormous threats like Progenitus in Standard. In Commander it’s even better, as it also allows you to bypass costs and Commander tax on heavy commanders like Etali, Primal Conqueror.

World War Hulk would probably already see a lot of play even if it were a sorcery with only this text, but the other two chapters are a nice bonus. As a powerful new mana cheating option, I expect World War Hulk to see a lot of play in Commander, and it may even enable new archetypes in constructed.

3 | Mole Man, Moloid Master

Mole Man, Moloid Master
Price from 1,85€

Despite his unassuming appearance, Mole Man, Moloid Master is one of the best multi-format legends from Marvel Super Heroes. In Commander, this new Landfall creature is great both in the command zone and in the 99. Simply being another Crucible of Worlds effect would already be solid, but the fact that Mole Man, Moloid Master comes with a built-in payoff takes the card to another level.

Unlike most Commander bombs, Mole Man, Moloid Master seems to have a lot of potential in Standard as well. With Selesnya Landfall still capable of dominating tournament results, this card seems destined for serious competitive use. Even though its low stats are a real concern, I still expect this new legend to become one of the most played cards in the set when the dust settles.

2 | King T’Challa // Black Panther, Hope Enduring

King T’Challa almost seems tailor-made for cEDH, offering the format a fantastic new draw engine at a very reasonable cost. Considering how often players draw multiple cards per turn thanks to Rhystic Study and similar cards, it can easily net you multiple cards per turn cycle. Even if it’s less effective at lower power level tables, the ability to draw from your extra draws makes it a reasonable build-around, attached to a late-game threat.

In Standard, King T’Challa could have a real chance of appearing in the format’s various Azorius lists. Both the more tempo-oriented Azorius Momo and the more grindy Azorius High Noon could find room for a draw engine with Flash. It could even see play in Jeskai Control from the sideboard, given that the back side is a truly remarkable finisher.

1 | Mjölnir, Hammer of Thor

While Mjölnir, Hammer of Thor immediately catches the eye with all its fun and thematic text, the last line is, secretly, the best part. A three-mana, instant-speed, uncounterable Pyroclasm is a big deal, and it could easily fit into tons of decks just for that. Whether you’re playing Standard or Commander, the rate here is good enough that many red decks will play it, regardless of the archetype.

Of course, Mjölnir, Hammer of Thor isn’t just that, as it also works as removal and a unique Equipment. Four mana for four damage isn’t exciting, but the flexibility is definitely welcome. While the Equip Worthy ability is quite niche, it can do some truly terrifying things, especially in Commander with cards like Vivi Ornitier.

All this without even talking about the card’s more obvious applications, such as an auto-include in Equipment and Voltron decks. Putting it all together, it’s hard to argue that there’s a more worthy MTG card of the “best of Marvel Super Heroes” title than Mjölnir, Hammer of Thor.
