The Hobbit Commander (HOC) is an upcoming Magic: The Gathering Commander deck, scheduled for release on August 14, 2026. Returning to the iconic world of J.R.R. Tolkien, this product is designed for the Commander format. Currently in its official preview season, 39 cards have been revealed so far, offering players an initial look at its gameplay elements.
Early previews for the Commander deck showcase several key mechanics. In the Story is a static ability that grants players an "eternal story" for the rest of the game upon meeting specific conditions, such as controlling certain historic permanents. Recruit is a new keyword action that allows players to draw and discard a card, then create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token if a nonland card was discarded. Equipment becomes more potent with Refinement counters, each providing +1/+0 to the equipped creature. The returning subtype Adventure offers flexibility, letting cards be cast either as a permanent or as an instant/sorcery, with the permanent becoming available from exile if the adventure resolves. Lastly, Amass returns, allowing players to create or grow an Army token of a specified creature type with +1/+1 counters. These mechanics hint at strategies emphasizing token generation, artifact and legendary permanent synergies, and Equipment-focused combat. Players are encouraged to revisit the gallery above for the latest card reveals as the preview season continues.
