The Premodern banlist covers the format played with the sets up to 2003. It is not sanctioned by Wizards of the Coast, so its forbidden cards do not appear in the official list: this page gathers them and keeps them checked alongside the other formats.
A banlist Wizards does not publish
Premodern is played with the sets up to 2003 and is not a sanctioned format: it was born in the community, which maintains its rules and its list. That is why its forbidden cards do not appear in the official list of tournament formats, and finding them gathered in one place is less trivial than it sounds. The list resembles the Legacy of the era when combo decks were nearly unbeatable, and it mostly serves to stop the format from shrinking to a handful of strategies that win before turn three.
How to check a Premodern deck
Before settling a list it is worth checking the cards in the other formats you might play them in: the complete banlist gathers every list on one page, and from there you reach the Legacy banlist and the Vintage banlist. To see what the latest change did to the tables there are the Premodern decks and the Premodern tournaments, while the spoilers of the sets on the way are where you see, ahead of time, the cards that may push towards the next intervention.
Frequently asked questions about the Premodern banlist
Who maintains the Premodern banlist?
The community that created the format: not being sanctioned by Wizards of the Coast, Premodern has rules and a list of its own, managed independently.
Which expansions can be played in Premodern?
The sets up to 2003. The list of forbidden cards reflects that era, and mostly keeps the format from shrinking to the few combinations that win before turn three.
