The Commander banlist covers the most widely played multiplayer format, the hundred-card one with a commander. Its list is independent of the competitive formats and looks at a different kind of game: longer, with more players at the table, and with the cards that win on their own as the main concern.
The Commander banlist follows rules of its own
Commander was born as a kitchen-table format and its list shows it: rather than speed, it looks at the cards that ruin a four-player game, the ones that repeat an effect forever and the ones that win without giving anybody a chance to answer. Its list is managed apart from the competitive formats, so a card perfectly legal in Modern can be forbidden here and the other way around. Worth remembering, too, that many tables apply agreements of their own: this page carries the official list of the format, not the house rules where you play.
How to check a Commander deck
Before settling a list it is worth checking the cards in the other formats you might play them in: the complete banlist gathers every list on one page, and from there you reach the Pauper banlist and the Legacy banlist. To see what the latest change did to the tables there are the Commander decks and the Commander tournaments, while the spoilers of the sets on the way are where you see, ahead of time, the cards that may push towards the next intervention.
